The best way is to install the roof drip edge only along the eaves first then place ice and water barrier in the snowbelt or felt paper underlayment over the drip edge. Extend this centerline back to and beyond the wall plate. 4x4s are inadequate for posts anyway and only columns with a face width of 5 1 2 e g a 6x6 or larger can be notched. Two lines and i want to extend both to their common point of intersection rather than extend one too far extend the other one to meet it then trimming the first line back.

Locate the centerline of the hip rafter not at the corner of the plates but at the corner of the two intersecting fascia boards. Just a quick opne. You couldn t find diagrams because that s not how it s done. The above workaround is sufficient but i keep finding i have to do this sort of thing so it s worth asking if there s a quicker way. Hold the drip edge up to the ridge and make a mark along where the drip edge exceeds the roof. You ll notice the hip rafter doesn t sit on the corner of the two wall plates.

The diagonal rafter that runs from the intersection of the ridges down to the top of the walls at the inside. Essentially the spine of a conventional stick framed roof the ridge board is sandwiched between the meeting ends of the roof rafters. At the low end of the valley the subfascias of the two roofs are mitered with a block filling in the roof framing. This lets any water that gets on the roof run down the underlayment and over the drip edge.
