A fascia board is technically part of the roof system of your house but from the ground it looks like part of the wall.

If the run is long you may need flashing to cover the exposed part of the facia. Water will blow in there and rot the timber facia. Rip the tops of the fascia boards to match the slope of your roof. It is a waterproofing layer made of regular felt stacked above the solid.

A horizontal timber or metal resting at the peak of the roof the rafters and trusses are connected to the ridge board for a cohesive framework. Get a roof inspection to make sure your soffit and fascia boards are in good shape. Set the angle of the circular saw blade to match the slope of your roof and run the saw along the top edge of each fascia board. Also known as a fascia. A composite decking made of solid materials it resembles real wood and particularly strong and stable for bearing heavy load. Its purpose is to cover the ends of the roof rafters and because that s where water drains off the roof the gutters are often attached to it. Fascia boards are installed onto rafter ends or tails as part of the exterior trim after a house is completely framed.

Roof edge or eaves edge all the boards running along the edge of the roof or eaves. Often holds the gutters. I felt pretty clever. In 1995 that seemed pretty good.

Slope the gutter down form there towards the spout. Got ourselves a kinda r 35 roof assembly when you factor in the thermal bridging. Flashing will start from underneath the roof and bend down and overlap the back of the gutter. The best way to prevent costly roof repairs is to get a professional inspection. As you can see keeping your soffit and fascia in good shape is important. Photograph 1 above left.

Above my photo below at left illustrates use of a site built drip edge nailed tight against the fascia board leaving a gap that in turn sends roof runoff behind the gutter. Eave the overhanging area of the roof that extends beyond the house to keep rain water away from the lower part of the home. The fascia board has to be resistant to moisture and rot or it won t last long. Soffit covering for the underside of the eave often vented.

Installed new shingles over a fully adhered membrane and the house looked pretty darn good photograph 3. Making the tops of your fascia boards the same angle as the roof allows you to easily place roofing material over them without creating bumps or ridges. Don t assume that the gutter is already sloping to the spout. The attic must be ventilated to protect the roofing system against excessive heat in summer and warm moist air generated by the house in winter.
